Rosario + Vampire is a TV anime series produced by Gonzo based on the manga series by Akihisa Ikeda. The episodes are directed by Takayuki Inagaki and composed by Hiroshi Yamaguchi, with characters done by Mariko Fujita. The story revolves around Tsukune Aono, a boy with poor grades who incidentally gets enrolled into Yōkai Academy, a special school inhabited by monsters and demons alike. He later meets Moka Akashiya, a vampire who soon takes a liking to his blood. He later meets other girls who soon take a romantic liking to him as he tries to conceal his human identity throughout his freshman year. The anime series differs from the manga in terms of focusing more on the romantic comedy aspect and the "monster of the week" motif that was previously featured in tokusatsu shows, though it remains faithful to the manga's storyline.

Thirteen episodes aired on Tokyo MX, Chiba TV, and TV Kanagawa between January 3 to March 27, 2008, with subsequent runs on Television Saitama, TV Osaka, TV Aichi, Aomori Broadcasting Corporation, and Kids Station. The series received criticism for its large amount of fanservice, leading the series to be censored on some networks as a result,[1] while they remain uncensored on the DVD releases. Six DVD compilation volumes were released in Japan between April 25 and September 26, 2008.[2][3] A box set was later released on January 29, 2009.[4]

A second season, entitled Rosario + Vampire Capu2, also produced by Gonzo, aired 13 episodes on TV Osaka between October 2 and December 24, 2008 with subsequent runs Tokyo MX, Mie TV, Chiba TV, TV Kanagawa, TV Saitama, Gifu Broadcasting System, Inc., Aomori Broadcasting Corporation, and Kids Station. The second season is based on the Rosario + Vampire: Season II manga, focusing on Tsukune and the girls' second year at Yōkai Academy and introducing characters from the second serialization as well as new anime-only characters, as it did with the first season. Six DVD compilation volumes were released between December 21, 2008 and May 22, 2009,[5][6] with a box set released on March 19, 2010.[7] The anime follows a naming scheme for the episodes, each episode being named "Something and a Vampire" (...とバンパイア ...to Banpaia?). The anime is licensed by North American anime distributor Funimation Entertainment, who will be releasing both seasons in 2011.[8]

Rosario + Vampire uses two pieces of theme music for each season: an opening theme and an ending theme. The opening theme for the first season is "Comsic Love" and the ending theme is called "Dance in the Velvet Moon". The opening theme for the second season is "DISCOTHEQUE" and the ending theme is "Trinity Cross". All songs are performed by Nana Mizuki, the voice actress for Moka Akashiya in the series.
