The final season of the anime series InuYasha aired in Japan on Animax from January 26, 2004 through September 13, 2004. It is produced and broadcast in High Definition, while maintaining its standard 4:3 aspect ratio. Based on the manga series of the same title by Rumiko Takahashi, the anime was produced by Sunrise. The series follows a high school girl, Kagome Higurashi who travels back in time to the Sengoku period of Japan where she meets a half-demon named InuYasha and learns that she is the reincarnation of a powerful priestess named Kikyo. Joined by a lecherous monk, a young fox demon, a demon slayer, and a demon cat, the group seeks to find the fragments of the shattered Jewel of Four Souls, a powerful jewel that had been hidden inside Kagome's body, and keep the shards from being used for evil, including the evil half-demon Naraku who slew Kikyo fifty years before Kagome's arrival. The first season introduces the central characters and shows the group gathering together.

The anime is licensed for release in North America by Viz Media. The English dub of the last season was broadcast on Cartoon Network as part of its Adult Swim programming block from March 29, 2006 through October 27, 2006

The opening themes for this season were "One Day, One Dream" by Tackey & Tsubasa for episodes 139-153 and "Angelus" by Hitomi Shimatani for episodes 154-167. The ending themes were "Come" by Namie Amuro for episodes 139-147, "Change the World" by V6 for episode 148, "Brand new world" by V6 for episodes 149-166, and "My will" by Dream for episode 167.

Kochou and Asuka, the Saint's two assistants, bring Kagome to a pool where Kikyo's body is suspended, dying from Naraku's miasma. Kagome is the only person who can save Kikyo, but it is a decision that is her choice alone.She chooses to save Kikyo and while she is purifying the miasma seeping out of Kikyo she sees a vision of kikyo's death at the hands of Naraku and how she was tricked into sealing Inuyasha to the tree. After Kikyo revives she aks Kagome why she saved her to which Kagome replies that it wasn't a a choice at all. The barrier dissipates allowing Inuyasha to find Kagome. Kagome tells him about Kikyo and tells him to go after her but he refuses saying that Kikyo is probably alright.

Abi is more suspicious than ever of Naraku, but her mother Tekkei advises they wait and discover Naraku's weakness before striking. Kohaku, now at the castle protecting the noblewoman and the Infant, saves them from Abi's demon birds.

Kohaku's peaceful life at the castle comes to an end when Naraku orders him to take the Infant and kill everyone else. He recovers his memory when faced with fighting Sango again. After Kagura aids in the boy's escape, unaware that Kohaku is finally conscious of his past, he attempts suicide but he resolves to kill Naraku to make amends when Kagura saves him.

Kikyo presents Inuyasha with an arrow for Kagome, which she will know when to use. Naraku betrays both Abi and Tekkei and kills them to open river of blood that will lead him to the Netherworld.

Sesshomaru, having arrived too late to travel using Tekkei's river of blood, is provided an alternate method of entering the Netherworld by Kagura. Hosenki is corrupted by his shard of the jewel which draws evil from the Naraku's shards nearby. Hosenki is finally weak enough from fighting Inuyasha that his shard is taken by Naraku.

Gakusaijin gives crystals with his aura to Miroku to use to find his stolen Fuyouseki orb and thus Naraku. Hakudoshi creates an experimental series of demons for no apparent reason except to fight Inuyasha and his friends, until the surviving demons steal Miroku's crystals.

A mysterious man (with a demonic arm) named Goryomaru has his child warriors fight demons and recover their corpses, which leads Inuyasha and his friends to investigate in hopes of finding the Fuyouseki. Kagura continues her dangerous investigation of the true nature of the Infant, but ends up badly injured and goes to Sesshomaru, expecting to die near him. Rin tries to pull her out of the water, but Sesshomaru must then pull them both out.

In the manga this is based from chapter 346 to chapter 350

Naraku lures Inuyasha and the others into the stomach of a large stone demon. He traps them there with the intent of collecting the Jewel Shard after they are dissolved by digestion. InuYasha attaches the Jewel Shard to his sword. Kagome helps him keep control of himself long enough to blast free of the demon. The series concludes with everyone promising to pursue Naraku until he is destroyed and knowing that the way to accomplish this is to destroy the child that represents his heart.
